Well looks like Alan has done it again, another great line up for Thursday night at the

Ditchingham Pavilion with live jazz music.

Come and join the merry crowd of jazz fans and enjoy a wonderful night of live jazz music

and fun.

The not so new venue now, as we have been there a few months, is proving to be a good place where we are made welcome and everyone can be in the same room to listen and meet up with fellow jazz fans.

They have not got the facility for food, but they make a nice cup of coffee! and the Broom Artichoke just down the road have a good menu, but do not be late for the jazz…

I have no idea how I managed to take such an unclear photo but did manage to get everyone in! so decided to put it on here. Sorry folks.

It was great to get to jazz again, thanks June for deciding to go, the roads were clear after all the forecast said, not so many people, but again the weather was probably the main reason. Those who were there enjoyed some great live jazz…

Good jazz, and some nice singing from Tony in between his trombone playing, Tim and Derek giving us some great clarinet and sax playing, Alan happily on guitar and banjo, Tony on his bass with the orange lead! Neil played some good upbeat drums, and Ray so nice to hear the piano played so melodic, really lovely..Thanks to everyone for all the good wishes after my night off last week! I missed you all as well.

Tuesday 14th February, Valentines night, so if you have not already got your tickets to take your favourite Valentine out, I am sure there will be some on the door if you did not take the opportunity to buy at the Pavilion on Thursday nights.

Doors open at 7.30pm for the start at 8pm-10.30pm.

Worth a visit come and enjoy live jazz music at this different venue for the night.

SNOW

Well they promised us snow and it has arrived, not too bad at the moment, but think apart from some snow clearing out there, it will be an indoor day!

Oscar my cat has not been well so does not want to go out, he usually revels in it, so it is all smooth and pretty still.

Now it can go away ..winter has been a long time coming this year, so all this is now spoiling the flowers and of course the birds are wondering what happened to the Spring!

Thinking back to the old days!!

I suppose when I was young it was a big adventure and snow came at the start of winter, we wrapped up and went out and built snowmen (persons nowadays!) had snowball fights etc, but these days it just seems to bring the country to a standstill, of course there were not many cars on the roads then and aircraft were for the military not for jetting abroad...Trains used to take all the cargo so lorries did not jack knife all over the roads...

We would wrap up warm and love it, but with the TV and radio telling everyone to stay indoors, all the terrible driving causing so many accidents ..snow nowadays has become the only talking point..ah well thank goodness for central heating and electricity, computers and nice food, staying in for the main is nice and cosy for most of us OAP's , I remember waking to the ice on the inside of the windows, water heated in the copper, and rationed food, so those days are best gone.... and Spring will emerge again someday..

Of course the bad weather does not affect all of us, but those who are sleeping rough .. having to be taken to hospital, who have to go and clear the roads etc will have a busy time, so I am very grateful that I am one of the lucky ones.

The blackbirds are making a lot of fuss outside so better go and make sure they have some food and water.. stay safe and enjoy the day.. it looks pretty .. so that is a bonus, and the children will love it..

I do hope everyone had a good time, I was miserable, seemed so strange not to be able to go and see them...but hope next week all will be well.

This Sunday at the Beccles Conservative Club for the monthly jazz session, we had a few of the Sole Bay playing, and what a pleasure it was...

A nice mix and a good crowd as well. I actually got a photo of our Tony with his head up! sorry Dave not such a good one of you this time. Hope the throat gets better soon Chris, but you did a good job, even if the guys did make you laugh when you were singing!

Barbara as always still playing a great banjo, and Mike you play well and will be missed next month, have a good day off.. Tim Densham will be playing next month in Mike's place.

Roy who sometimes gives us a song or two had a bad cold so hope he will be fit next month, he does bring some good energy to the set, and the ladies love him.. Nice to see Alan looking in as well, it was like home from home with a nice crowd of Sole Bay folk.

You may notice the keyboard player is not there, he was late! so the second session inlcuded him, and also Tony and Dave with Ray helping gave us a great little number which went down very well.

The Conservative Club welcomes all on these Sunday lunchtimes once a month, well worth a look.

Every week when I write on here a little about the live jazz that is performed for us fans on a Thursday night I think it cannot get any better, but this week at the Pavilion it did just that.

Thank you gentlemen for a really great night of music, not only did we have a wonderful mix of different sounds, with Doris Day and Marilyn Monroe influences among the many other themes, the fun you all had made it even better, I have never heard so much applause and cheering, you all played so well and your drums Craig looked as good as they sounded...

I have managed to get most of you in the photo this week which makes a change as well. Trummy always manages to get more notes out of that trombone than anyone else, and Tony on his magic double bass what a player.

Ron, you told me you like playing at the venue, well we love having you there, so welcome to our little corner, a nice smile as always from Craig here..

Ray you played so well, so many different sounds, and Alan there in the background, well done Alan you always get a great mix of players, and this week was especially good.

Roy was invited to sing a few songs and as always he gets everybody going with all the energy he puts into them..

Thanks again to our hosts Jon, Marilyn and Heidi who always make us welcome, and thank you as well to the footballers who let us share this nice place with them on a Thursday, good to see that some are getting a kick out of the jazz, they do not hurry away after the game but stay and listen.

And to all the friends who make the night .. you know who you are..what a lovely crowd that gathers together to listen to live jazz. Nice to see you Mike and Bill as well, may get you up there again one day?

A bit late posting today been a busy one..

Once again last night proved to be a great one for live jazz music, nice to see a few people starting to pop in from the locality.

Simon gave us some lovely songs, nice to see you again Simon, and looking forward to the Art Deco night on February 14th, I will post about that later...

Very good as well to see Bill at the new venue, I love his style of trombone playing..I do hope you managed to find your way home alright Bill. My directions are not always reliable!

So thank you all for yet another good night, thanks again June for giving me a lift and for the laughs, also Colin and Duncan tormenting me as usual, and the many friends that gather to hear the music.. makes life very uplifting for me.

Thanks as well to the very nice folk who run the Club and make our night so happy, you always make us feel welcome. The coffee is great as well...

We were treated to a great night of live jazz music at the Ditchingham Pavilion last night thanks to some really good musicians..that are named in the post below..

Ron who did so well as had a very bad throat, but played so well.

Making it a very nice mix of fun and good music, plus Roy came and gave a few songs.

A good crowd turned up to support the band, and some new folks as well, glad to see also some local people looking in, so pleased that the new venue is turning out to be "just the job".

Thanks to June for the lift and all the lovely people who are making it possible for the Sole Bay to share their talent and provide a great evening of live music.

We are always treated to great jazz playing, but 7 this week again which I hope will draw many regular fans that have not so far made it to the new venue.

I must say again what a fantastic group of jazz followers every week are finding the Pavilion a rather nice venue, but still room for more to show their appreciation of live jazz music in our little part of the countryside. Nice also to see some local folk coming to listen, we are so lucky to have such a great place for the musicians to show their talent and entertain us. Great to relax and let the worries of the day reside for a while.

Well a really good start for 2012 at the Pavilion, I was so pleased to see so many people turn up in such horrible weather to support the band.

Once again I have to comment on the fact that the new venue is turning out to be so much nicer, and to thank the staff for not only taking the fans of Sole Bay on but for being such good hosts.

It was such a good night of jazz, with seven great musicians playing some different arrangements that Derek Cubitt had been working on, and everyone enjoyed it.

The whole place was a buzz with enjoyment, so thanks gentlemen for another night of live jazz.

Just added the photos, Tony Parsons singing some really great songs.. also playing the trombone, (not at the same time) and Derek with his bright shirt happy as always...Ray concentrating.. Alan working hard, seem to have caught Neil with his head coming out of Tony's double bass....and Tim on the clarinet.

Last evening I was again spoilt and had a wonderful evening of jazz with good friends..

Phil Brooke was playing at the Hatfield Hotel which has a basement that is ideal for intimate jazz called 'Milestones' Of course I have only got into jazz again in the past few years, all my friends have been ardent fans for many many years, and I am so grateful that they include me in their journeys to hear live music.

Jasper Smith was fantastic as well a great touch on the strings, reminded me of how my David used to play at his gigs...

The young man in the top photo gets it altogether and he does a grand job, also plays a very good guitar, the bass player and the drummer were at the Green Man the other night, and they of course added to the great jazz.

But to hear the duets of the guitars had to be the highlight for me.

Thank you dear friends for a lovely start to the new year...

Last jazz session of 2011 at the Pavilion, and a good time was had by all, a nice lot of laughs and some good music..

It was so good to see so many people supporting the band last night as the weather was not good, also a nice lot of new folk coming to listen, it is proving to be a really good move, and we are looked after so well, tables and chairs can be moved around to suit peoples needs and the coffee is great..

I would like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year and good health to all, some have really suffered bad health this year, so lets hope good health will prevail in the coming year..

The Green Man at Rackheath

A bit out of sequence this as it was on the 20th December, I was spoilt once again and taken to the Green Man at Rackheath.. Thanks also to Pete who had a table so we were able to join him. This is a very busy pub!

This was just a little Christmas song that I could not resist, even if it is only a clip. Phil Brooke is a great favourite of mine. both Tim and Ray also played a few numbers, another great night. Derek was playing as well, and we wished him a Happy Birthday for the23rd December, such a lovely man and hope he will not mind me saying very fit for being 84.

I am just popping on here to hope you are enjoying Christmas Eve Day is that the right way of saying it?

Also to sit a few minutes as have been in the kitchen all morning baking, smells lovely, hope it tastes as good tomorrow...

When the red cabbage is cooked will be off to deliver some presents, then back for a bit more prep ready for tomorrow, then can just relax and cook the meal, and maybe have a walk then just sit with my two wonderful lads, who will probably be bored with having to come to Mum's at Christmas yet again...

Just also to say I hope anyone looking in who has not got family and who may be on their own at this time of year, try and remember the true meaning of Christmas and that you are never really alone while you have in your heart memories of lost loved ones ..and that is is really someones birthday we are supposed to be celebrating, and he is always with us all, whether we believe or not.

Roy Waller a dear man from Radio Norfolk who is sadly no longer with us always used to say remember the good times, so please do.

Santa will soon be here!

What a great night at the Ditchingham Sports Pavilion with the Sole Bay Jazz Band last night.

Such good musicians and more guests than I stated in the earlier post..., also so many friends of the band enjoying a pre Christmas party.

I have been rather busy today so sorry I have not had time to put the photo on, but hope to do so soon.

I would like to thank the band obviously, for the very entertaining jazz, but also the staff at the Club, thank you Marilyn for heating the food for us, for Jon and Heida as well, June and Jane for helping to hand it round..and for all the compliments, glad you enjoyed it. So many lovely friends that make my life much happier for being with you all. Thank you.

We are so lucky to be able to have a venue that everyone who comes to hear the band can be in the same room, and have such pleasant people to look after us.

I am sure you will join me in wishing them all a very Merry Christmas and we look forward to many more happy musical nights.

Nice also to see more people coming to the jazz that have found the new venue, someone did mention that the EDP has stated a later time in their publication, so I will repeat on here that the band now starts at 8pm and finishes at 10.30pm. if those who look in here could tell as many as possible.

Hello folks, nearly Christmas and I expect many people are flying around like me trying to get everything done in time.

I am spending so much time in my kitchen that the bungalow smells rather delicious, not sure if my cooking is as good as it used to be but the boys and visitors seem to eat it so....

But on Thursday I will be looking forward to a night out at the jazz at Ditchingham, and hope that a nice lot of you will be there.

Now why did I win a Tiger in a raffle what is wrong with a bottle of wine?

At Tesco this morning I put my change in a charity tin, and had a go at a raffle and this is what I won! it just fitted on the back seat of my little KA car, but I have donated it to a gentleman that does a lot of charity work, and he is going to put it in a Christmas raffle that he holds in Beccles next Wednesday, I will donate some money but dare not have a raffle ticket he he.

The Tiger is sitting on my sister in law Phyllis's sofa as we always go shopping on a Friday morning together. she is going to get John to collect it as soon as possible as I do not think her cat would approve, and neither would my Oscar.

Friday evening I was once again spoilt by getting invited to join some friends at the Southwold Pavilion to hear Dixiemix perform, the Pavilion has recently been updated and the acustics were really good.

The line up was a bit different than I had seen before, but what a great night of music, and of course fun as they usually have lots of that in between playing..

They were all really good, but have to mention the drummer who was sitting in as he did a solo which went on for a long time and was very very good, like the old big band drummers we used to go and listen to.

Thanks Simon for the welcome, you are good to your second Mum and I hope the photos although not good are OK for your lady to see you.

So if that is the first of Southwold having Jazz back it will be a success I am sure...

Thanks to all on our table for the company, and congratulations to the staff who made everyone welcome, the food was very nice as well...the tables looked really good with white cloths the chairs were comfy as well.

A few photos from Thursday...

Another great night of jazz on Thursday, It was amazing how many people came to support the band as it was really horrible weather, but great fans turned up and enjoyed a night of good music. Thanks June for taking me think we were a bit more cosy in your car than mine in that weather.

Ray Simmons came along as well as the members I had posted earlier, so we had 7 musicians.

I would like to thank the staff, who have been providing food for some of us, they did not 'do' food before we came along, as the facilities are not there, they have tried their best but are no longer able to provide meals. I am sure we all appreciate they have 'given it a go' so please eat before you come to the jazz..or just feast on the music.. and again we thank them for giving the food a try for us.

It is a lovely venue and everyone has made us all welcome, and like Alan say's you all make the night by turning up and supporting these great jazz players...

Next week do not forget, there is a prior booking, so no jazz for the 15th, but looking forward to seeing a good crowd for the 22nd..

Alan will be giving me the line up at a later date.

Last night at the Maltings Pavilion Ditchingham the lovely new venue where the Sole Bay Jazz Gentlemen now give us the pleasure of live jazz music on a Thursday, was as ever a great night.

We had Tim, Alan, and Tony, with guests Ray, Craig,Trummy and Ron, what a line up, you would have to go a long way to hear better jazz, and with the really good crowd of fans that follow the Sole Bay it turned into another night of music, laughter and friendship. Thank you all.

Roy gave us a couple of good songs as well, have done a couple of videos so will see how they turn out at a later date, mainly because I have to remember how to put them on here!

As I mentioned in the last post it is a really nice friendly place and pleasant people who take care of us all.

Hope to see another good crowd next week, Alan will give me the line up after the weekend, so watch this space.

I have decided to split the report of the Sole Bay Jazz from last night as wanted to just say a few thank you's.

Firstly of course to the band, who last night once again gave us some really great live jazz music, I have taken some photos and will post later, and maybe a video at a later date albiet a rather shaky one I think.

Thanks go I know from the Sole Bay to all the great fans regular and occasional who support these musicians, and I am proud to be one of them.

A thank you to the Social Club who have let us into their premises and for the football players who suddenly have found their venue overtaken by jazz fans..I do hope that some of them will join the jazz crowd when they realize what good jazz musicians we have that come to play for us.

The staff at the club have welcomed us with open arms, and a big thank you to them, I think I can say that we were all a little worried what it would be like at a social club, but I think it is also fair to say that the venue is proving to be a success thanks to them all, how good of them to let us move tables and chairs, have a warm and comfortable clean spacious place to listen to the jazz, and the bar staff who provide a smile and the drinks to us all, having been a landlady I do appreciate them..also thanks for having some food laid on, something which was not expected at the start of moving to the Maltings, I have managed to not have a peep in the kitchen as yet, but having spent a lot of my life loving cooking, am always interested in other peoples kitchens!

I personally would like to mention a thank you to the landlord of the Buck who decided he did not require the band or us fans anymore, because he has done us all a great favour by not appreciating the musicians or the wonderful crowd of people who support them, thank you all and hope that it may continue to flourish at the new venue.

Thank you to all who do look in on my blog, I do hope you forgive some of my ramblings, but I also hope that you will pass on news of the jazz to those who do not have a computer.

Just to add how good it was to see the Denny family back again and Keith looking in much better health.

Look forward to next week and meeting up with you good people, but I will post some photos when I get home from shopping of last nights gig.

Jazz with the Footwarmers plus!

Sunday lunchtime at the Beccles Conservative Club brought forth another fun time.

Lovely to see some of the "old crowd" from Ipswich who paid a visit and kept everyone in high spirits, they are a lively bunch, and the bass player who will be 91 next year gave us a melody.

Dave and Tony gave us a melody called Cute and it was..Craig gave us a few numbers on the drums as well...Barbara on the banjo you were great, well everyone was really and thanks for the trumpet player who came to stand in.

Live music is always good as mistakes are turned into fun, and somehow there were a few this week, but handled well as it is a cosy venue and they took the laughter well. Hope we did not offend, as always the music is always appreciated, I must mention Chris how well he managed to carry on with one of the songs as he had a lot of help! I think that is what it was called.

So all in all a great lunchtime thank you all.. Next one January.

Just a few photos

Another good night at the new venue, and they had a football match going on at the sports centre, so lots of football fans about, Hope they liked the jazz and then we will have a few more people to appreciate the Sole Bay.

As you can see we had Simon singing for us, and very nice to... also Ron Hockett who came along and played some very good clarinet.
I have just heard from Alan that Ron Hockett is on u tube and wow if you get a chance watch him. my goodness no wonder we all thought he was good! Maybe he will be there again watch this space..

Another very good crowd of regulars so good to see, and the staff provided some food, even though they were very busy with both the jazz folk and the football crowd they did well so would like to thank them for the good service, a very good bar.

I hope they are enjoying saying yes to having the Sole Bay at the sports club, I think I can say for us fans it is a nice place to be...

I would like to also add, that Keith has been very unwell of late, and so we wish him a speedy recovery, nice to see the family there to support Sheila and Simon..

Looking forward to the line up for next Thursday.

Will just remind folk that the Band now starts at 8pm until 10.30pm, also that on the 15th December we will not be able to use the club as they had a prior engagement from before Alan was able to book the venue.

Another good night at Ditchingham Jazz

Although the number playing was reduced this week to 5, they gave their all, and it was really great..Simon sang a nice lot of songs, also Chris gave us a number..

Very pleased to see a nice lot of jazz fans turning up, some more of the old crowd found the new venue thank goodness, and by the sound of it they really enjoyed themselves..

The Club did some meals so that was good of them, and the service and friendlyness of the place was commented on more than once, so well done Alan for finding this little gem for the Sole Bay to play. And thanks to the staff we appreciate you. As Alan commented it is the fans that encourage the band to play, and they are loving the feed back from everyone.

Thanks Dave for making some posters which are now spread far and wide, so hope they may bring a few more people to join in.

Next week the session will start at 8pm and end at 10.30pm this will be nice for the winter months especially, and will allow the staff to clear up after us all.

Also I must mention , and will again, that the Pavilion had a prior booking on the 15th December, so there will not be any jazz there that evening.

I think Alan has managed to sort such a lot out for us all to have our Jazz with the Sole Bay, so hope a nice lot of people will support as always.

Again I believe the staff will be providing food this week, and I am sure they will try and accomodate you if you enquire as to what they can supply on the night, very good of them to offer.

SOLE BAY JAZZ

What a great night as I have said in the last post below, the photos were taken very early on in the evening, and I was so pleased that in the end over 60 people turned up and it was such a friendly happy evening.

There will be food of some kind, as no one knew they could provide it at all, this will be appreciated in the future and I am sure Alan will be able to get some idea on suggestions that may be used in the sort of food the fans may like, without it being too much trouble for those providing it.

I have been asked to say that next week the 17th the jazz will start at 8.30pm until 11pm as usual, but from then on they will be starting at 8pm and finishing at 10.30pm.

I would also like to thank Neil for pointing a few facts to me, as I had spelt something wrong and I do appreciate that he looks after me as to the contents of my blog, usually I just write how I feel, but as now a lot of folk look to see what is coming on I must be more careful.

One of the facts is there was a flyer last night about a DixieMix gig at the Pavilion at Southwold . Which I am sure will be another good gig on the 9th of December, I am sure a lot of jazz fans will be going to it!

This is of course different to The Maltings Pavilion at Ditchingham and the Sole Bay Jazz that is the new venue for the them on a Thursday night every week.

Now Neil have I nicely muddled everyone up by putting that on here.!

New Venue a Hit!

I will post photos tomorrow, but I had to pop on here as I am just back from a great night at the Maltings Pavilion and wanted to say some thank you's.

The Sole Bay played as always great.. but somehow it was even better tonight, we were in a great new place and very good bar and club staff, so thank you from the Sole Bay, it was a pleasure to be made welcome, and hope it will be the start of some really good evenings of jazz.

Thanks to the fans as well I was so pleased to see so many there to support the band, and hope you enjoyed it as much as I did..

Dixie at the Diplomat

I have borrowed the title from Jean and Vic's flyer as it is cute!

Yesterday I was spoilt again, (getting a habit! )

I was invited to the Diplomat at Coltishall to see the Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band, thank you Tim and for lunch, great company as always...hope I did not chat too much. thanks also to the three "J's" for making it an enjoyable lunchtime, Jean, Judy and Jill.

I think the guys were really good, I am very partial to the guitar as both my boys play, so maybe the old ears are tuned to that... it was jazz which was uplifting and fun, I am sorry I clap so much Judy, habit from the weekly gigs.

Vic on the drums, Tim reeds.. Bill trombone..another Vic on double bass..and John trumpet and songs..as I said Peter on guitar.

Why they always put a light behind people when I want to take photos I had better get back to the drawing board with this camera, hope yours came out better Jean.

A lovely venue and such friendly people, (nice clean loo's). Thought you ought to know that. An ex landlady always looks for clean loo's..

You will notice Jill singing with the band she did a couple of numbers,she is with the double bass player Vic, Jill has her own band where she lives, and what a gorgeous voice and great personality, she hopefully will be moving this way in the future, so I do hope she will sing sometimes with the Sole Bay Jazz, will have to chat Alan up to include her. Tim I think would be pleased to hear her again.

We always used to go to the air base to watch the displays when it was a working base, and so brings back good memories.

I have chosen 'AMEN 'as the title of this post, as last night the landlord of the Buck at Flixton, decided he no longer wished for the Sole Bay Jazz Band to be held there. For strange reasons I must admit, as having been in the trade for many years, I would have loved to have such a good friendly crowd in my public house , but after nearly 3 years we say goodbye to the Buck.

So it was our last night..

All night I have been going through what I would like to put on here, but 'so be it' will say it all and we start a new Thursday night Sole Bay at a new venue.

First I would like to thank Alan as he has worked hard with others to sort this problem out, I cannot believe that such a brilliant crowd of jazz musicians cannot find a decent place to play on a Thursday night, but thanks to him and friends the Thursday night venue will be..

THE MALTINGS PAVILION, PIRNHOW STREET, DITCHINGHAM, BUNGAY
NR35 2RU..

They have a bar and a dance floor I have been informed but no food, but do we need food? have something to eat earlier before you come and hear these great musicians. I am sure we will have a wonderful time. Alan has sent the line up but I will pop that on the next post, because, I wish to say a few things on here.

Last night was a great night of jazz, thank you all the band and although spoilt a bit with the worry of being the last time there, the music and singing was a really high standard. Among the line up ,which was in the below post, we had Roy singing as well...

I would just like to say a big thank you to all, I think myself so lucky to have found such good friends to share Thursday nights with.

Now Sheila, our dear friend who has had her operation, which thank God has turned out well, and such a brave lady, would like to say a huge thank you for all the cards and messages of good will she has received since her op..I must say her family rallied around to make life more comfortable, and Keith we know how hard it has been for you to see your loved one go through all that, but onwards and upwards, keep up the good work Sheila we are all behind you.

So Adieu to the Buck and on to the Maltings Pavillion. Look forward to seeing a good crowd to ensure the Sole Bay know how much we think of them..

FOOTWARMERS

I am going to try harder with this new system of putting photos on here as I do not seem to have a space to write under each one forgive me it will be back to the drawing board...

The Footwarmers who I named a few posts down.. had an added bonus yesterday lunchtime at the Conservative Club as Ray Simmonds played Trumpet, as you will know a few playing here are with the Sole Bay Jazz band, and they mixed in well with the other Footwarmer players.

They gave us a really great jazz lunchtime, I must say it was a real treat and all the customers joined in the applause even those who just came for a quiet drink.

Chris hid behind the pillar but he not only played but sang as well.. good to see Barbara again on the banjo, Peter Elliot gave us a couple of numbers on the drums, whilst Dave had a break. then Roy Symonds popped in and so he was asked to sing, and hopefully he will do so again, as he went down very well.. Of course I must mention the great number of Tony on double bass and Dave on drums it was so wonderful ..well done you two.

It is really good that the Club encourages Jazz wish the Sole Bay could play more often there, although I must say that Mikes Footwarmers always give a great jazz session. Hope they enjoyed the addition of some of the Sole Bay folk.

Thank you all the band as I said you were great....and friends for the company you know who you are, and the dog well he is not with the band , he is Peter's (who will not mind me saying is blind), and as some of the customers had food, he was looking longingly at that and so could not resist taking his photo, what a wonderful thing the dogs are who help our blind people, he was so good.

I do hope that we can get a few more members to join the Club, as like all businesses if we do not use it we will lose it, It is a beautiful building with so many facilities a snooker room, function rooms, and a great bowling green..so please pop along anytime and ring the bell and I am sure you will be made welcome, have a coffee, we have some really good directors now who take part in a lot of the running of the club, so do come and support it.

Then of course you can listen to some great music as well as the other items that are on the agenda.

TOCCATA DUO

Last evening at the Beccles Conservative Club, we celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Club, they had a dinner a week ago but not all of us could go to that, so we had an evening for those who missed out. And the cake..Which turned out OK, madeira is so hard to get right, but everyone said nice things....and thanks to Julia and Michael for a nice buffet meal as well.

Toccata have been at the club several times, but each time I missed them, but not again, they are a fantastic duo, not only great voices, but a real feelgood act. From pop to musicals and then at the last a request from Jim as it was his birthday, Ava Maria, sung by one of the girls.wow is the only word I can say, what a performance. You truly could have heard a pin drop even on the carpet.

Tears were flowing when they sang some of the hit musicals past and present, it really was like being at a theatre and Les Mis. was mind blowing. As you can see I enjoyed it very much.

Jim I hope you like the photos , you were very brave. phew that was great entertainment.

I was not sure I wanted to go on my own, of course I know nearly everyone there, but it was 9 years since my darling John passed away, although I felt he was there with me as he is always, he and my brother Derek who we sadly lost this March loved the club where they spent many happy hours playing snooker, maybe not well but with enjoyment.

So thank you friends for making my night, and keeping me company..and today, as the post says below, today we have the Footwarmers playing jazz at lunch time. Watch this space..

Sole Bay Jazz Thursday 3rd November

Well here we are again! no idea for how long, but Alan has done well and Landlord Phil of the Buck has agreed to have these great jazz musicians back on Thursday 3rd November.

Several folk have told me the sign for the jazz has been outside the Buck for the past 2 weeks, just the Sole Bay and us missing!

Party Cake!

I would not say this was my best cake as I really am not good at some of the requests I get for the tops of cakes, The writing looked better on the actual cake than on here! I suppose I like doing my flowers best, however I did enjoy making the car..and they said it was just what they wanted, so should be happy.

The cake was a 10" madeira with marzipan and icing made with 10 eggs, so hope it ate well, as have another one to do this week.

Sorry 'Full' if you look in, the finish on the car is not as you would do on the real thing, but I did my best.

Last night, as we could not have jazz at the Buck, so a few of us went to the Pier Hotel at Gorleston, as one of our jazz players was asked to play there , and we went to support him...

Thanks Dave for the lift, really appreciated it and nice to catch up on old times...I think you can see we all had a great laugh and the jazz was good...Just a few of us enjoying the night out, I am the lucky one who can hide behind the camera!

Ian on the sax here, and Roy was asked to give a few songs as well.. Nice music lads a bit different to what we normally hear on a Thursday night. but good.

A really good meal with prices very reasonable, lovely white linen cloths and napkins, which of course makes a difference when eating....the staff were very nice and friendly, and so a good night was had by all.

A shame that the the Buck decided to give the jazz a miss for a couple of weeks, but at least there are other places that are available for a good night out, maybe the landlord of the Buck missed us all and the Sole Bay Jazz Band will be back there soon.

If not you will have to watch this space for future nights of jazz....

I have borrowed this from one of my Son's blog, it reminded me how much I am going to miss our jazz on a Thursday night. A sad Sousaphone and straw hat...

Then even more of a need to make my brain work, blogger has changed its image, I had noticed that some of my photos would not get bigger when clicked on, and now the whole thing has decided to have a different outlook, however this may be a good thing as a lot of my followers have not been able to comment, so hope the new format will allow a few of you google folk who have a password to have your say, it is nice to see how many do look in, but would be nice to see it!

Still hoping that one of the jazz lads, will have found a venue for Thursday nights for the next two weeks, and that the landlord of the Buck will have us back! I do thank all who have phoned me in the meantime, it is sad but nice to know I am not the only one who will miss our nights...

This Thursday at The Buck we had "Roy and Friends" playing for us, and what a great night, thank you lads you did us proud..

Roy and Ian always play well together and Barry on the keyboard, what a good voice he has, we had a lot of different music, with backing from a couple of the Sole Bay ..Tony on the bass, and Neil on drums..

A nice grin from Neil, and Ian giving us some great music, everyone played so well together, and some people who had not heard Barry, Ian and Roy play really enjoyed the mix of music.

Barry ..I did as you asked and put the unsmiling one up of you, do not want to ruin your reputation..ha ha.

Another smile from Dave who gave us a few numbers on the drums.

One of Tony who always hides in the back but who has a magic touch with the bass...

Thank you Roy for taking me and Stella, lovely to see so many fans there. Colin and Duncan thanks you know what for..!!

Now this was a sad night in a way, because the landlord has decided to have a 2 week break from the Sole Bay at the Buck , which means we either have to go without our jazz for two weeks or find somewhere else to meet up and enjoy the music...So hope we have lots of people looking in on here so they know what is going on. and hopefully I will be able to tell you when and where the Sole Bay will be playing again...

I did try to get him to change his mind as we have been there for nearly 3 years after losing the venue at the Tally Ho where the Sole Bay had played for nearly 25 years...

I hope he will miss us all and have us back soon...We have such a great crowd of jazz lovers, and I am sure we will miss our Thursday nights. hopefully for a short time.

Lovely to see some of the swing dancers there, and hope you enjoyed your Happy Birthday we all sang to you Haley..

Good news that Sheila our dear friend is doing well and getting better everyday..

Keep smiling ...just wish I still had my "pub" I would welcome you all with open arms.

Jan bought me this Impatien early in the year, and it has just bloomed again.

I put it in with my herbs just outside my back door, and so can enjoy it everytime I go outside.

Such a gorgeous colour, this year we had a bad year for busy lizzies another word for the impatien, but although I lost all the lizzies, did not lose this, so can still enjoy it. Thanks Jan..

This cake has been eaten now, and just heard it was fine.....so now have another ready to go on Wednesday, then three more to do, before I can start on my Christmas cakes...and with this bad back am hoping I can get back to good health very quickly!!

Roy Symonds and his friends..

Roy is a great sax player and singer we also have Ian who plays a mean sax as well., and Neil will be there on the drums, with Barry on the keyboard...Tony on the double bass..

So come and hear more live jazz with a difference...

I just hope my back will be Ok as I am fed up with missing my jazz nights!

I was unable to go to jazz this week, because of this bad back, it is a rare occasion when I do not attend, and missed you all.....but Keith just rang and said it was a great night, also added to that Ray Simmonds played as well as those I listed below this post..

So glad also to hear that dear Sheila has come through her operation alright, so sending all our love to her for a swift recovery. such a lovely lady.

Looking forward to the coming Thursday when we should have a different line up ..will post that for those who look in when I receive it

Where do I start this morning? Think this might be a long post..I must say that the Sole Bay Gentlemen were GREAT last night, the jazz was again different because of the line up and much enjoyed by one and all, so thank you all for a fun musical evening. I had a good one of you Bill but you moved or was it me, but good to see you again ..loved the trombone playing..

During the evening Dave took over the drums from Neil with Geoffrey on his Bass guitar playing for a session, here with them is dear Derek (love those knees )!

I make no excuse for posting this one "Father and Son"...

Could not resist this one either nice smiles, glad you all enjoyed the evening..

I was rather a way back when I took this..Mike giving us some really good songs.. nice to see you again Mike do not leave it so long next time..and Neil in the background, drummers are often hidden...as are Bass players Tony always hides, but the double bass always sounds great.

This is one I rather like, although not a great piece of camera work! but this is our Landlord, who is not really into jazz, but obviously he enjoyed last nights live music. So are you begining to like us Phil?

Later Chris gave us a song as well....although I did not catch a good face sorry! but you sounded good, nice to see you Ruth and Chris..and thanks Rosemary for the company, of course Duncan and Colin as well..even though I do get a lot of stick!

Next week one of our dear ladies, Shiela, has to go into hospital so we wish her the very best and look forward to her returning to the fold as soon as she can, we will keep our eye on Keith!

I have not been doing many cakes of late, as my hands and back (ah poor old thing!) are not as good as they were, but three friends have rung up and so I decided to try again, here is the first one, apparently according to my friend it was well received and it tasted as good as it looked, so maybe I have not lost my touch after all...

BIG BAND SUNDAY

June and I had a good day out yesterday, with lunch at the Buck, and then on to the Air Museum where the Big Band was playing.

Good music and meeting up with lots of friends and lovely weather, a nice way to spend a September afternoon...

It is always a good place to visit lots of things to see even on an ordinary day, but the special days are really worth going to, a lot of effort goes into the day, well worth it as a good crowd once again..
Nice to see all ages there as well. A good way to remember all those who not only gave their lives for us, but for all the folk left behind who have lived a life with injuries from the war, and more so for the wars that are still going on, a good way to Help the Heroes of today as well.

The singers were good as well...
There were some great swing dancers, but they were rather fast and the pics are blurry they were fun to watch and feet were wanting to get out with them.

The only picture I could get of our Dave who was well hidden! but sounded great..a drummer with a great heart, sounded good Dave..

The flight that was supposed to come over could not take off as where we were it was good weather, but where the flight was going to take off from was very windy and of course the Battle of Britain areoplanes are so precious they have to be well taken care of. however a local chappie has a Mustang and he did some great runs, my little camera, or is it me? could only manage to take this one, but at least I got it!

Then a pleasant walk down to the river before returning for the second half of the music, made it a lovely Sunday.. Hope you enjoyed yours wherever you were..

JAZZ AGAIN!

Thursday night at the Buck in Flixton, once again the Sole Bay folk gave us a great night, albiet that there were only 5 of the band to entertain us, so they had to work very hard..and they sounded good as always.

With a very appreciative crowd that turned up to cheer them on. Nice to see some new faces as well.

Great to hear and see Craig, was not expecting him this week, such a great drummer this man and always a smile on his face...

Luckily Roy was about so he came and gave us some great songs, so thanks Roy think you and the guys gave us some fun.... even if they did try to put you off on some of the numbers...

Here is Trummy with his other the ... (you know what Tim calls this,) and his trombone playing is so good never heard so many notes coming from the trombone..

I seem to have missed Alan off the photo this week, sorry but great banjo and guitar playing as always...

Looking forward to next week already, hope to see a nice crowd to support the Sole Bay, they play great live music and live is always good..

Thanks again June for driving us and for the good company...

Missed Colin and Duncan this week, so hope to see you next week gentlemen....think you may have lost your seat to June, Duncan, looks like you may have to sit near me next week, tee he.

Must also say that our landlord Phil actually mentioned he enjoyed the jazz this week wow that is a good sign...

ART DECO

No photos today but what a great night. Wish I could have taken a photo as they all looked so good in their best clothes! as we usually see them in their casual outfits.. if you look back I am sure I have put a photo up of them as Art Deco, very smart...

The Beccles Music Festival who gave us Art Deco at the Waveney House Hotel last night, were as always a pleasure to see and hear.

You know who they are as I write about them in some form or another every week, when most of them play for us at the Buck in Flixton..

But Ray Simmonds..Tim Densham..Alan Cugnoni.. Tony Jullings..Neil Kane..who are part of the Sole Bay Jazz Group always seem to have such fun when they play as 'Art Deco', and of course the lovely Simon Denny who sings with them, looked great in his tux, and sounded as always so good, even with his bad throat and cold so thanks to them all for a good night out.

What a great crowd as well and good that they gave such an appreciation of the band, how lucky are we regulars at the Buck to get to listen to them on a Thursday night, I hope some of those who paid for their seats last night will filter through to come for some nights at the Buck and hear more.

Thanks gentlemen as always live jazz at its best.

Sorry that you could not make it June hope you are soon better, but Janet enjoyed your place, Jan so good that you could make it even though you were feeling rough, nice to see a lot of the Thursday night crowd there as well....

Beccles Music Festival

Two posts in one day but had a busy time yesterday!

With some good friends (and a few of the fans of the Sole Bay Gentlemen) we went to St Michaels Church here in Beccles to see and hear Jacqui Dankworth in concert, with her backing group of Roy Dodds-drums (great solos) Dudley Philips- bass (lovely finger picking) and the great Chris Allard -( a wonderful guitarist).

Jacqui has a great voice and sounded so good in the echoing church, and what a full house, she of course refered to her Mum Cleo and her Dad John, all in all a great night of entertainment.

A pity they did not have a higher stage as I think most of us had a stiff neck trying to see them as the church maybe is not a good venue for everyone to see, but the sound was good and as we were in the back pew was able to stand now and again to see them all..

Even the bats came out for a while and flew around...They are used to being quiet I expect in mid week at the Church!

Well done to all the helpers at the venue as they worked hard, and looked great in their suits and dicky bows...all went smoothly and lets hope the good work continues for the festival...

There are a nice lot of entertainment for the coming week, We are off to the Waveney House Hotel next Tuesday to see 'Art Deco', which is of course our own Ray Simmons, with Tim Densham, Alan Cugnoni,Tony Jullings and Neil Kane who entertain us on Thursday nights...and Simon Denny him of the lovely voice that sometimes we hear at the Buck as well...

Enjoy it all everyone who attend even some of what the Festival is providing, we are proud of our little town and nice to hear good things as well as all the many unsavoury stuff that goes on around us in this world today, nice to sit back and relax and enjoy life.

Alistair

This is an old photo of Alistair and me in Norwich several years ago, he is much more handsome now and I am older and much less bubbly!

As I have often been asked how I came by the title of "cakes and al" and for those who do not know.....

In 2003 Alistair Griffin was a singer on Fame Acadamy and it being the year after I lost my John I found that watching the programme made me feel good.. Now of course Alistair would rather forget the Fame Acadamy label, but if he had not been on this I would not have met up with him or some of the wonderful people that followed him around the country.

When the programme finished I was wondering what was happening to him so I joined the fan club on the internet, much to my boys at first being rather worried that at my age I had gone a bit too far...and called myself feelgood as that is how he always made me feel when he was singing.

I thought I would never see him live, but soon some fans suggested I got on the train to York and one of the ladies who lived near here said lets go together, so after years of being a stay at home person, I turned into a travelling over the country meeting up with a good crowd some I am still in contact with..

This morning I have received a cd of Alistair, thanks to a dear friend Lesley who got to his gig the other night and bought me one..

Typical Alistair who has a wicked sense of humour it is called Mogganaut.. it is probably only on sale at the moment at the gigs...But it is great only 4 tracks but it has made me appreciate all the journeys made to see him live...

One of my Sons joined me one night when Alistair came to Norwich with Jake Humphreys (who has now gone on to be a reporter on TV...) he took the above photo and now he is a fan as well.

I hope he goes on to do more great music because he has talent, and has given me years of listening pleasure so thanks Al hope one day to see you again...

And of course the 'Cakes' piece of the title is my hobby of making and decorating cakes.

Another good night of live jazz plus a nice lot of songs, and those of us who were there had a good time, it was unfortunate that not many followers came this week suppose holidays and illness prevented a large crowd...sad for the band who played so well, but maybe next week we will have more support.
Sorry Tony seem to have missed you and your double bass, from the photo..you hide at the back so much ..

But as I said it was a good night and nice friends with live music cannot be bad...so hope the lads enjoyed the applause as they were appreciated.

Hope this will work... Yesterday I got spoilt again and went to see the Dixie Mix Band in the delightful setting of the Kings Arms in Reepham..

Great day out thank you to Tim and Keith, the very pleasant company and the fun afternoon listening to some really good live jazz.

Of course the video does not give the best sound, but it gives you the hint of what it was like.

Nice to see Barbara again and for the next few weeks great banjo playing...

Nice to see the Swing Dancers there, even if there was not a lot of space, and not good to dance on a carpet, have a nice break and come and see us again soon...

Jazz in the Park Somerleyton

Another year gone by since I posted the jazz at Somerleyton, and here we are again...

Part of the Sole Bay Jazz band playing and in the interval Neil Kane and his trio keeping everyone entertained..
Great music as usual from them all..and it was appreciated by the crowds...showing live music can still draw the people..

Simon did try to get people up to dance, but no takers this year, but never the less it was a great afternoon.

The sun came out for some of the afternoon, but the wind was chilly, it was funny to see how the weather changed us folk..we kept putting coats on and off according to how the weather behaved!

This dear little peacock had been walking around all afternoon picking up bits of food off the ground, so at last I decided to take its photo, only a couple of little boys had already decided to chase it, so it flew up onto one of the roofs... so you cannot see the lovely colours on its neck. ah well you cannot win them all...

Thanks for taking me Jan and June for the great company, and meeting up with family and friends..glad we all enjoyed our picnic, next year perhaps we should include wine as most people did!

The Sole Bay Band gave us yet another great night of live jazz music, with the usual players..Tim, Alan, Tony were guests Simon, Bill, Ray and Craig, singing as well Simon Denny and a few drum numbers by Peter, so everyone there had a real taste of good live music for free..How lucky were we. Oh and Craig that solo was great..

All in all a great night, the crab was delicious Phil (landlord) and the company as usual fun .
